István Kovács started his professional activity in 1978 at the General Building Design Company (ÁÉTI). He founded Kovács & Kovács Stúdió Kft. in 1993 after the large state design companies ceased to exist following the regime change. Since 2019, the company has been jointly managed with Jelfi Szabolcs.

The scope of activity of Kovács & Kovács Stúdió Kft. is structural design and expertise. The types of planned facilities range widely. The main profile is the design of residential buildings, from family and semi-detached houses to condominiums and residential parks. In addition, the company's profile also covers the structural design of hotels, shopping centers, hospitals, educational institutions, sports facilities, parking buildings, floor extensions, prefabricated reinforced concrete, steel and wooden industrial halls.
